Artist Residency at the Himalayas Art Museum Shanghai
The Himalayas Art Museum in Shanghai has awarded Thilo Westermann a residency fellowship following a decision by its jury. Over the course of two months, Westermann will live and work within the museum’s historic Qing-dynasty complex, located in the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao in Shanghai’s Qingpu District. Building on his earlier studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, he will dedicate his time to an in-depth exploration of classical Chinese ink painting.
The Himalayas Art Museum (上海喜玛拉雅美术馆), formerly known as the Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art (上海证大现代艺术馆), is a privately funded, non-profit art institution located in Pudong, Shanghai. Established by the Shanghai Zendai Group in 2005, the museum is dedicated to art exhibition, education, collection, research, and academic exchange, serving as a dynamic platform for contemporary and cross-cultural dialogue.
The museum covers a total area of 10,000 square meters, with more than 4,000 square meters of exhibition space. Recognized by China’s Ministry of Culture as one of the nation’s fifteen key art museums, it is widely regarded as one of the leading private art institutions in China and across Asia. Since the launch of its artist-in-residence program in 2010, the museum has welcomed artists from around the world—including the United States, Japan, India, Germany, France, Finland, and Canada—creating a vibrant platform for cross-cultural exchange and artistic innovation.
The Himalayas Art Museum also plays a prominent role in major global art events. It has served as a co-organizer of the China Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale and the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale, and as a key partner of the Marrakech Biennale, the Liverpool Biennial, and the Gwangju Biennale.
